I frequently go into nature for a couple of days, either by myself or with a friend. That sure makes me very happy! Backpack filled, walking into nature and finding a place to build a shelter or pitch a tarp. Combined with a fire… that’s what I call home. Focused on the basics of life and being surprised by whatever comes your way. The beautiful thing is, the more you know and learn the more you see. This year I’m doing an animal track course and see more than before. It’s so much fun to see that just before you a row deer galloped across the path and that in the cover of a tree stump a mouse has enjoyed a meal of nuts…
Halfway March I was at the Veluwe with minus 10 C at night (I was toasty warm in my shelter on my sheepskin) and only two weeks later it was around 20 degrees warmer. We’ve had massive temperature differences this spring. All of a sudden it was warm and nature was bursting from its seams. This also meant many edible greens. I had lentil-nettle soups with ground ivy and common chickweed accompanied with a salad of tender beech leaves with common- and sheep sorrel.
I tasted spring again with all my senses and… it tasted …. very good, it left me wanting for more…
The first weekend of May there was a ‘skill and nature-awareness’ weekend (or you could call it bushcraft basics). For the participants, a new world opened up… on that left them wanting more! Fires were started, bushcraft knives put to use and wild edibles tasted. The combination of the rest of nature and ‘gezelligheid’ of the group made it a wonderful weekend! Several resolutions were made. This morning I heard from one of them that she, despite all business, goes into nature for a bit every week. The weekend in May help here realize how much being in nature met for her and that she wanted to prioritize this. Another participant loved it so much that she is going to help out with future weekends. I’m quite curious about the other resolutions… there was one about lighting the bonfire with friends the proper way, not with toilet paper drenched in oil anymore :-)…
Did you do some exploring in nature this summer? Did it leave you wanting for more..?
